On the 28th of May 2023, PM Modi inaugurated the New Parliament House. It has been built alongside the Old Parliament House. The built-up area of the New Parliament Building is around 65000 sq feet. It has been made in a triangular shape to ensure optimum space utilization. It has ultra-modern office spaces and sophisticated audio-visual systems. It has also been made Divyang friendly so that there would be no inconvenience to physically disabled persons.
The ceremony for the New Parliament Building was held in October 2020. The foundation stone was laid on the 10th of December 2020. Bimal Patel was the chief architect of the project. In this project, it took 862 Crore ₹ (110 Million $) to complete this project. The Seating Capacity of the newly constructed Parliament is 1272 including both the Houses of Parliament, the Loksabha (888) and the Rajysabha (384).
As part of the inauguration, a historically significant gold sceptre called the Sengol was installed in the New Parliament Building. The opposition parties largely abstained from joining the event, expressing their preference for the President to open the building instead of PM Modi.
