Supreme Court Says 'No' for National Commission for Men
PC- Supreme Court of India

On the 3rd of July 2023, a bench led by Hon’ble J. Surya Kant and Hon’ble J. Dipankar Dutta refused to hear the plea seeking for setting up a National Commission for Men. This Public Interest Litigation was objectivating towards setting up a National Commission for Men in line with the National Commission for Women, to address the issue of domestic violence faced by men.

The PIL was filed by Advocate Mahesh Kumar Tiwari, seeking guidelines for Police Stations accepting the Complaints lodged by men concerning domestic violence, suicide by married men, family issues or other marriage-related issues and referring the same to the concerned State Human Right Commission. He also cited a report by NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) stating that out of 1,64,033 people who committed suicide across the country in the year 2021, 81,063 were married men and 28,680 were married women.

However, the Supreme Court showed no interest in entertaining the PIL so he withdrew his PIL. The order of the Court reads as follows:

“After arguing the case for some time, learned Senior Counsel for the petitioner seeks to withdraw the Writ Petition with liberty to pursue the representation stated to have been made to the competent authority.”
